The European Union is back in the trade dispute with the United States. From Friday on import duties of 25% on goods worth around € 2.8 billion.
Bloomberg reports this Wednesday on the basis of sources in Brussels. In total, two hundred products will be affected.
It is the first phase of retaliation after the Americans taxed European steel with a levy of 25% and aluminum with 10%. These US taxes amount to € 6.4 billion in exports from the EU, roughly 10% from the Netherlands.
The levy of 25% affects iconic American products such as Harley-Davidson engines, Levi Strauss jeans and whiskey will hit if President Trump does not bind.
These were more specifically mentioned in the warning from Brussels to the US that Europe would hit its American import by way of retaliation.
European Commissioner Malmström (Trade) now states in an e-mail that the countries no longer see any other choice after the "unjust decision of the US".
The EU already mentioned the American levies on the metals outside of any ratio. First, European producers do not work below cost as many Chinese metal processors do, she said. Moreover, American metal companies can not do without it at all
President Trump used the protection of national security as an argument to make European products more expensive. Brussels calls that action pure protectionism.
They supply much broader European aluminum rolls for car manufacturers and beer and soft drinks suppliers that Americans do not yet get from their factories.
According to Bloomberg, the measures are announced tomorrow and they go on Friday. For a retaliation of the remaining € 3.6 billion, the EU later takes countermeasures, according to Malmström.
